Cappella Campestre
Years earlier, in the middle of the fields of surrounding the hamlet of San Leonardo Valcellina, I came across a statue dedicated to the fallen Alpini – the Italian army’s mountain infantry specialists. The site included a covered picnic area for Alpini reunions as well as a 15th century chapel dedicated as the Oratorio di Santo Spirito di San Leonardo di Campagna.
I have visited this site many times and in different seasons. This time it was fall with the dried stalks of grain corn standing tall waiting to be harvested.
I walk quietly when I visit this location so I can see, hear and smell its spirit. A cool breeze rustling through the foliage. The scuttling of clouds. Late afternoon shadows against the Oratorio’s stuccoed walls. The heady musk of damp soil open me to its namesake of Santo Spirito – the Holy Spirit…
