Piazza Curtain
There is only one Piazza in Venice – Piazza San Marco. By decree any other square is called a campo and next to the gondola, Piazza San Marco is a Venetian icon. With the Ducal Palace, bell tower, clock tower and it’s Byzantine crown, the Basilica di San Marco has been photographed many times and in many ways. Usually teaming with tourists, the Piazza challenges my need for photographic privacy. I feel very exposed, on many levels, while setting up and taking my photographs but one has to take a photograph of the Piazza – at least in some fashion! It was early one morning before the crowds started to arrive when I chose to try to photograph the Piazza. The weather reports said it would be a very hot and humid day and taking advantage of the stone and marble’s cooling effect, the curtains along the galleria surrounding the Piazza were in place. Their billowy nature drew my attention immediately and they transformed into a robe for the figurehead attached to the keystone of the arch. With their Murano glass pendants, these robed figures watching the Piazza come to life – again. But it made me ask – what is behind the curtain? Tourists cooling themselves or window shopping in the galleria, bureaucrats going to their offices which lead me to the Great Wizard of Oz – hmmmm…
