Bridge and Gondola
I had passed this view many times leaving my Uncle’s home and going to Piazza San Marco. The Gondolas that are usually parked along side Calle delle Acque and prevented me from seeing this view were gone, except for one. From this narrow and busy sottoportico I set up my camera at the foot of the bridge to the not so veiled threats of locals and the curiosity of tourists. In the midst of this commotion this quiet view of a bridge crossing to the entry of two palazzi came together in private under my dark cloth.
While I was working on taking the photograph, the pikes along side the bridge loomed at me. They appeared ominous in this quiet scene. Was there a reason for them? Was there something that they were protecting?
I probably could find out what they are for from some book or expert on Venice and maybe some day I will. But for now, I prefer to continue wondering.
